Advanced Mathematics

Pre-Algebra is an advanced course for seventh graders. This year-long course prepares students to enter the study of Algebra I (a high school credited course) as eighth graders. The focus of the course is building the foundation necessary for success in the study of algebra. Students will become familiar with the following: the properties of mathematics; the language of algebra; solving one step and two step equations; adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing rational numbers and integers; solving inequalities; graphing equations and inequalities; proportion; percent; statistics and graphs; probability; applying algebra to geometry; measurement; introduction to trigonometry; and the study of polynomials. Set includes Starline Press Pre-Algebra Books 701-712 and Teacher Score Keys. Ninth grade students learn points and lines, line segments, rays, planes, and lines and points in planes. They study definitions of angles and degrees and measuring the size of angles. They learn to classify angles by size and relation and how to bisect an angle. Students study parallelograms, properties of a trapezoid, ratio and proportions, and the Pythagorean Theorem. Ninth grade students know derive and solve problems involving the perimeter, circumference, area, volume, lateral area, and surface area of common geometric figures. Students know the definitions of basic trigonometric functions defined by the angles of a right triangle. Tenth grade students add, subtract, multiply and divide polynomials. They work with complex fractions, ratios, and proportions. Students study the basics of quadratic equations, the square root method, and solving absolute value equations. Students learn about linear inequality, graphing linear inequalities, applying systems of linear inequalities, and addition and multiplication properties of linear inequalities. Tenth grade students study logarithms and antilogarithms and how to work these problems on a calculator. They study Pascal's Triangle and The Binomial Theorem.
