Poetry Comprehension Grade 2

The focus is comprehension; the vehicle is poetry! Explicit teaching instructions make it easy for every teacher to introduce students to poetry in a non-threatening environment. Each book contains a two-page assessment that can be used as a pre- or post-test for the book. Then, the book is divided into twenty lessons. Every lesson includes a teacher page that displays the skill being practiced, a summary of the poem, specific directions on how to introduce the poem, a list of vocabulary words, and ideas for additional writing activities to complement or extend the lesson. Each lesson includes a poem that complements topics taught at each grade level. Following the poem is a 7-question assessment. The first six questions are presented in a standardized-test format and test on facts, sequence, context, main idea, conclusion, and inference. A final question then has students write a brief response to a higher-level question. With twenty grade-appropriate poems and similarly formatted lessons in each book, students will definitely be prepared for standardized test questions on poetry. Bound-in answer key. 96 pages.
