  4. A Child's First Book of American History

A Child's First Book of American History

    SKU: 7941

    $32.95

A Cathy Duffy Top Pick This is America! And this is its glowing, epic story, from the days of the Viking expeditions to the birth of the Atomic age. Here are the explorers, the American Indians, the settlers and fur trappers, the soldiers, the statesmen, the men and women who have shaped our country and its destiny. It is our story of adventure, of wars, of industry and invention, of hardship and growth; it is an unparalleled tale of courage, high ideals, hard work--and a precious thing called Freedom.

Perhaps more happened, faster, in the history of this country than in any other. Earl Schenck Miers tells its story as it should be told: in terms of the great moments and events, and through the lives and experiences of individuals.

Among the fifty chapters included are: the faith and longing for freedom of worship that brought the band of Pilgrims to Plymouth's shores; James Smith's own account of his capture by the Indians in 1755; excerpts from Davy Crockett's diary, telling of the last days of the Alamo; a young Southern girl's description of the burning of Columbia, S.C., in the Civil War. Miers has recreated unforgettably, the hardships of a cattle drive, the inspiring story of how Booker T. Washington overcame great obstacles to build a school, the suspense that held America in a spell in 1927 when a young man named Lindbergh flew to Paris by himself.

This telling of the American story is dramatic, ever engrossing--and it is based on careful scholarship. The more than 200 illustrations by James Daugherty--most of them in color--are an integral part of the book. A great artist and a superb scholar-storyteller have joined forces to produce a memorable record--an instructive, immensely readable and heart-warming book about the country we love.</p

  16. Ugears Tower Windmill mechanical kit

    Ugears Tower Windmill mechanical kit

    SKU: 10240

    $89.99

The Tower Windmill from Ugears is more than a mechanical puzzle. It is an exciting adventure into the history of old England. The model is based on the Chesterton Windmill, a 17th-century cylindrical stone tower windmill that was built outside the village of Chesterton, Warwickshire county. Built around 1632-33, the Windmill was restored between 1965 and 1974 and today it is the earliest tower mill in England to retain any of its working parts.

This unique construction with an arched base was presumably built by a prominent figure of the period, Sir Edward Peyto that owned Chesterton Manor at that time.

Sir Edward was an enthusiastic mathematician and astrologer, which brought up the presumption that the tower mill was initially designed to become an observatory. Although there is no evidence to support this theory and we can only guess what had driven the post-medieval nobleman to create this beautiful and unique windmill.

This Ugears model designed in “Victorian steam-punk skeleton” style is based on a prototype from Chesterton.

When spinning rapidly the aerodynamic twist sails create fairly strong wind. It also can work the other way around: blowing air directed at the sails will make them spin. Use a fan to demonstrate to your kids how real windmills operate.

A double planetary gear reducer with differently shaped gears provides the necessary speed.

The model is powered by a removable rubber band motor. Once the motor is removed, the Windmill can work in a manual mode that allows you to observe and examine the fascinating complex mechanism in detail.

The rubber band motor drives the sails by means of a screw conveyor (worm feeder) and gear transmission. The design of the gear transmission includes a flexure link, the type of chain drive assembled out of many small links. The full-fledged chain drive made out of plywood has never been used in the Ugears models before.

Resembling a spiral staircase, the rotating base of the arched tower is a part of the screw conveyor mechanism that is a chief part of the model’s mechanism. Fascinating mechanics of the moving gears will captivate your attention for a long time.

While taking origin from the English prototype, the Ugears model also addresses the Spanish classic: the Tower Windmill comes with the figures of the Ingenious Nobleman Don Quixote and his quirky companion Sancho Panza.

The Ugears Tower Windmill model kit is made of sustainably sourced high grade wood and has everything you might need for assembly. The quality of the parts is top-notch: a laser method is used for cutting items from a plywood board that provides precise hairline cuts. The details have to be pulled out of the boards and assembled to create a complete model. Like all other Ugears models, the Tower Windmill comes with step-by-step, full-color, truly easy to follow instructions in 11 languages (English, German, Ukrainian, French, Polish, Spanish, Russian, Turkish, Italian, Chinese and Korean) and requires neither glue nor special tools to be fully assembled into functional working Windmill.

Dream Cabriolet VM-05 mechanical model kit, by UGears

    SKU: 10241

    $89.99

Looking back into the history of mechanics once again, Ugears couldn't miss such an important and interesting period, in a not-so-distant past, as the 50s. Rockabilly music, swing dresses, bobby socks and, of course, magnificent luxury cars and convertibles: feel a part of the time with our new ingenious work – The Dream Cabriolet VM-05.

The 50s had given automobiles a completely new look, producing absolutely unique recognizable designs. The Dream Cabriolet VM-05 is a highly detailed and extremely realistic tribute of the Ugears’ designers and engineers to the automobile industry highlights of that decade.

The model is traditionally equipped by a rubber-band motor that powers the mechanism and drives the car. The Cabriolet can go forward or back. To ensure you can take a close look at the beautiful eight-cylinder V configuration engine in operation, we introduced the idle mode. In this mode, your Cabriolet will stay still letting you look under the hood to appreciate the beauty of the moving gears. Should you want to put your vehicle in motion, pull the transmission lever on the steering column.

Both front and rear wheels of the model are suspended to make its ride ultimately smooth. Use the steering wheel to move the front wheel coupling and send the Dream Cabriolet in the direction you choose.

To make the design of this unique model even more realistic, Ugears engineers added a few important elements that make the automobile look extremely lifelike. We believe you will enjoy the window cranks and fully functional windshield wipers as well as a lifting jack and a repair toolkit mounted under the rear trunk.

Another mechanical feature is the trunk and hood opening mechanisms that add some extra-vividness to this highly detailed vintage vehicle.

Find your favorite retro radio station and your Dream Cabriolet will take you into the dreamlike 50s to share the best of what the decade has to offer.

The Ugears Dream Cabriolet VM-05 model kit is made of sustainably sourced high grade wood and has everything you will need for assembly. The quality of the parts is top-notch: a laser method is used for cutting items from a plywood board that provides precise hairline cuts. 23. The Jungle, By Upton Sinclair

    The Jungle, By Upton Sinclair

    SKU: 7808

    $6.00

An ardent activist, champion of political reform, novelist, and progressive journalist, Upton Sinclair is perhaps best known today for The Jungle — his devastating exposé of the meat-packing industry. A protest novel he privately published in 1906, the book was a shocking revelation of intolerable labor practices and unsanitary working conditions in the Chicago stockyards. It quickly became a bestseller, arousing public sentiment and resulting in such federal legislation as the Pure Food and Drug Act.|The brutally grim story of a Slavic family who emigrates to America, The Jungle tells of their rapid and inexorable descent into numbing poverty, moral degradation, and social and economic despair. Vulnerable and isolated, the family of Jurgis Rudkus struggles — unsuccessfully — to survive in an urban jungle.

A powerful view of turn-of-the-century poverty, graft, and corruption, this fiercely realistic American classic is still required reading in many history and literature classes. It will continue to haunt readers long after they've finished the last page.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame, By Victor Hugo, A. L. Alger

    SKU: 3783

    $8.00

A mad priest, a vagabond playwright, a social-climbing soldier, and a deformed bell-ringer — all are captivated by a gypsy girl's beauty and charm. Two of them will betray her, but the others will remain loyal, even in the shadow of the gallows. These outlaws find sanctuary within the walls of medieval Paris' greatest monument, the grand Cathedral of Notre Dame.

"What a beautiful thing Notre-Dame is!" declared Gustave Flaubert of Victor Hugo's 1837 novel. Originally published as Notre-Dame de Paris (Our Lady of Paris), it was conceived as a story of the cathedral itself, which functioned as the passionate heart of fifteenth-century city life. But Hugo's human drama rivals the Gothic masterpiece for dominance. Drawn with humor and compassion, his characters endure, both in literary history and in readers' imaginations: Frollo, the sinister archdeacon; Quasimodo, the hideous hunchback; and the enchanting outcast, Esmeralda.
