  5. Pericles

    Pericles

    SKU: 6202

    $10.95

Pericles was one of the most popular plays of its time, and it has regained much of that popularity today. In a wide-ranging introduction, Roger Warren draws on his experience of the play in rehearsal and performance to explore the reasons for this enduring popularity. Unfortunately Pericles survives only in a corrupt text, the Quarto of 1609, in which many passages are nonsensical and others appear to be missing altogether. Earlier editions have merely cleaned-up the Quarto, but this edition offers a conjectural reconstruction of what the original play might have been like. It draws upon George Wilkin's The Painful Adventures of Pericles (1608) to emend some of the errors and missing material. It does so in the belief that the play is a collaboration between Shakespeare and Wilkins. The entire Quarto text is reprinted in an appendix, together with the passages from Wilkin's narrative that have particularly contributed to the reconstruction, so that readers can see for themselves how the reconstruction has been made. • Abraham Lincoln, by James Daugherty

      Abraham Lincoln, by James Daugherty

      SKU: 0721

      $16.95

"James Daugherty has turned his pen to the greatest American of them all: Abraham Lincoln, sixteenth president of the United States. His book is the people's Lincoln, Lincoln the man--seen through the clear eyes of an artist and poet, American to the bone. It is a story to set the blood tingling and fill the heart with sorrow and glory, to set the footsteps of the mind on leaf-fallen Kentucky ground, on Springfield's pavements, and down the hurried streets of Washington in the spring rain. It is a picture of a tumbling, surging young nation with the pioneer states knocking at the door, the era of the coonskin cap and the French brocade. Across its broad canvas pass the lynx-eyed backwoodsmen, the crinolined belles of the plantation South, the slick politicians of wartime Washington in the 1860s, the desperate fighters in blue and gray. It is the sound of battle, and the bands playing 'Dixie,' and the march of tired feet and the trumpets calling." -description from the original 1943 edition It is Lincoln as his contemporaries saw him, as we might see him now. He stalks through these pages with his gangling humorous ways like a well-beloved friend. Originally published in 1943, Daugherty dedicated this beautiful work to his son, "Lieutenant Charles M. Daugherty, American soldier-artist and his comrades in arms throughout the world." In every case where tyranny raises its ugly head, Lincoln has and will continue to stand as America's shining symbol of freedom, justice, and equality. 216 pgs Learn More
    • Cruise of the Arctic Star, by Scott O'Dell

Cruise of the Arctic Star, by Scott O'Dell

      SKU: 0728

      $13.95

In The Cruise of the Arctic Star, O'Dell takes a voyage up the length of the California coast in his cedar-hulled offshore cruiser named Arctic Star. With his wife Elizabeth along as skilled navigator and cook, a friend Del as cohort and deckhand, and an unpredictable hired hand named Rodney Lambert, the crew journeys up the coast and experiences first hand the delights and drama of life at sea along this beautiful shoreline. Along the way, the author relates the colorful narratives of California's past through the stories of men and women like Cabrillo, Viscaino, Junipero Serra, Kate Sessions, Kit Carson, Jedediah Smith and many more. Drawing from journals of other notable visitors like Richard Henry Dana, Robert Louis Stevenson, and Sir Francis Drake, readers are given a window into life in California hundreds of years ago. 220 pages. Reading level - 4th through 8th grade. From Beautiful Feet Books. Softcover. O'Dell offers readers dramatic incidents seldom featured in text books on California history - like the worst peacetime disaster in the history of the United States Navy that occurred in the treacherous Jaws of the Devil near Point Conception. Readers will delight in the story of Jedediah Strong Smith's wrestling with a grizzly and the wilderness friend who stitched his ear and face back together - with no anesthesia, of course! Pirates have to play a part in a land so rich in coastline - and they do, with buried treasure on a Southern California isle known as Dead Man's Island. The stories of the discoverers, explorers and settlers of California have never been drawn so delightfully as they are under O'Dell's pen. With his love of his native state, his knowledge of the landscape, sea life, and historical past of this region, O'Dells work continues to stand as an important contribution to the rich literature of the Golden State. The Renaissance and the Reformation are pivotal periods in both Church History, Western History, and World History. The Renaissance was the beginning of the modern world. Its leading thinkers were the first to recognize that there was now a huge gap between themselves and the ancient nations of Greece and Rome, and that civilization had been through a “dark age.” The Renaissance revered Greece and Rome and sought to recover the ancient languages, literature, art, and in some cases also their pagan religion. The biographies are written so that they can be profitably read by an upper elementary student as well as any high school student. 15 figures from the Renaissance and 15 from the Reformation whose lives illustrate the history of the times have been selected in this text.. From the Renaissance: Petrarch, Giotto, Brunelleschi, Donatello, Cosimo de’ Medici, Lorenzo de’ Medici, Savonarola, Botticeli, da Vinci, Michelangelo, Cesare Borgia, Machiavelli, Pope Leo X, and Erasmus.
