Robotics Smart Machines: Rovers & Vehicles

Robotics is a vast, thrilling, and sometimes overwhelming interdisciplinary field involving physics, engineering, and computer science. This kit gives kids a simple, fun, and customizable introduction to robotics that lets them build eight motorized machines controlled by programs and an ultrasound sensor.

Kids code the programs using an easy, visual programming app on a tablet or smartphone, which connects to the robot models via a wireless Bluetooth connection. The ultrasonic sensor works on the same principle as sonar. It sends out sound waves, which bounce off objects. The sensor interprets the echoes returning to it, and from this detects objects in the path of the sensor. Using the app interface, you can program the robots you build to behave based on the feedback coming from the ultrasound sensor.

Build a shy turtle robot that drives around and quickly avoids obstacles in its path. The friendly rover bot model first looks around for your hand and, once detected, moves toward it and follows it around. Construct an awesome desert explorer robot with wheels on legs; first it drives around, but when it detects an object in its range, it starts “walking” slowly toward it. Experiment with altering the program of your cute dancing robot so that the robot dances to the beat of a song you play for it. Set up an obstacle course and watch the scout rover use its ultrasonic sensor to navigate around the obstacles. A cool helicopter model spins its rotors and then raises its landing gear when you lift it off the tabletop. You can also assemble other fun robots including a dozer bot with a bulldozer blade and a scorpion robot with a stinger tail.

After you have learned how the technology works, you can build and program your own robots using the kit’s 233 building pieces. A full-color, 64-page step-by-step illustrated manual helps kids assemble all of the models and teaches them about robotics in the real world. The visual programming language allows you to command the robots’ motors to move at different times, different power levels, in different directions, and in response to the data from the sensor.

REAL Science Odyssey – Earth & Environment 1

    SKU: 3241

    $68.99

In RSO Earth & Environment 1, the topics include scientific modeling, a study of three of Earth’s “spheres,” weather, climate, the environment, erosion, and plate tectonics. Students study the weather; climate and climate change; the age of the earth and forces that shape it; and current pollution and environmental issues that affect water, land, and air. Short lessons are followed by several hands-on labs and activities including making a Pangaea puzzle, testing various methods of cleaning an oil spill, making a geologic timeline, and water cycle in a bowl. Rocks and minerals are studied in depth with students identifying their samples through the same tests used by geologists.Earth & Environment 1 (E&E1) is being offered as an alternative to one of Pandia Press' most popular courses, Earth & Space 1. Some of the best parts of Earth & Space 1 (E&S1) are included in this course, but E&E1 includes many new elements; most notably environmental science topics and scientific modeling activities have been added. REAL Science Odyssey – Astronomy Level 2 Student Book

    SKU: 3018

    $69.99

RSO Astronomy (level 2), written by Blair Lee M.S., is a comprehensive astronomy course at the middle school- to high school-level (grades 6 through 10). But unlike many science textbooks, RSO Astronomy 2 is not a dry collection of facts and worksheets but rather an in-depth course that engages young people’s minds at the same time that they are actively participating in the learning of astronomy. RSO Astronomy 2 has been created specifically for home and small group use. The course assumes no science background for teacher or student, and there’s no need for an expensive laboratory. Astronomy 2 uses natural settings that encourage students to explore the world and the sky around them. The materials needed for labs and activities are commonly found items. The course is contained in two books (student text and teacher guide, sold separately. Teacher Guide Item #3138)). The student text starts each chapter with an entertaining written lesson that is followed by several components intended to reinforce the lesson, address the needs of different learning styles, and engage students in hands-on learning and research. These components include lab sheets, lab reports, problem sets, activities, famous science research assignments, poetry, quizzes, and tests. The teacher guide provides all the help a science novice needs to assist her student including suggested course scheduling, summaries, additional material and explanations, sample reports, learning objectives, answers and suggestions, and test answer keys. Divided into 12 chapters, Astronomy 2 provides a complete semester-long astronomy course that is generally completed in 12 to 16 weeks. 8. UGEARS Locomotive Engineering Kit

    UGEARS Locomotive Engineering Kit

    SKU: 3810

    $78.90

These amazing 3D Self Assembly models from UGEARS are fun to assemble as well as educational. The clear view of all the moving components, including gears and pendulums, creates a unique, unforgettable and fascinating look at everyday (and not so everyday) machinery and engineering concepts. Although, the kits come with clear step-by-step instruction, they can also be called puzzles as the challenge is always present. These unique self-propelled mechanical models are made of sustainable, eco-friendly wood, and each UGEARS model assembles easily and without the need for glue or special tools. Each model is capable of a unique and fascinating range of self-powered movements, all without batteries. The UGEARS Locomotive employs all technical solutions UGears have come up with for previous models, and more. It looks realistic and unique at the same time and shows off the UGEARS style and modeler skills prominently. Spinning gears, pistons and wheels carry the body and soul of 19th century engineering, when locomotives represented the mainstream of technical progress, the time of a fierce competition between the developed countries in steamers’ construction. It is the largest model, rich with details, the fanciest model of the entire UGEARS range with the largest number of parts. Completed, the Locomotive stands out as a truly original piece of mechanics that required diligent assembly work. (Although it may look complex, it is not that hard to build). Using the massive gearwheel array, this relatively big model can run up to a distance of over 15 feet. The distance and speed depend on the winding of the largest 12 rubber band engine. The engine is started with a lever near the driver's window. UGEARS has tried to make the locomotive main mechanism move as close to the real thing as possible with asynchronously operating piston and valve. They’re clearly visible inside the model, allowing a spectator to see how steam would get into the Locomotive’s steam chamber. The little doors and roof hatch let you take a look inside the Locomotive’s cabin, complete with an instrument panel and a retractable ladder beneath the door. Once assembled, this is truly an amazing work of art and science! Number of parts: 443; Level: Hard; Assembly Time: 10-12 hours; Recommended Age: 14+ Learn More
