Quick Overview

First Start Reading A-D Set is a balanced, age appropriate approach to phonics and reading, with a serious focus on correct pencil grip and letter formation. Also, while many phonics programs today use the ladder approach (consonant-vowel blending) FSR uses the more traditional (vowel-consonant) approach combined with word families.

First Start Reading covers consonants, short and long vowels, 45 common words, and manuscript printing, accompanied by artist-drawn coloring pictures and drawing pages for every letter.

The Teacher Manual guides you through the program and provides helpful assessments and teaching tips. This set includes the following: First Start Reading Books A-D and the Teacher Guide for all four student books.

Details

Memoria Press follows what founder Cheryl Lowe calls “common sense” or “classical” phonics. There is no need to turn phonics into complex linguistic study, as some programs are wont to do. Memoria Press’ First Start Reading program teaches correct pencil grip, manuscript form, consonant and short vowel sounds, three-letter word formation, consonant blends and long vowels/silent e. Unusual words are introduced after students learn to blend three-letter words. Using this program, students learn to read in kindergarten using stories with a high percentage of phonetic words. This is the most effective and efficient way to teach reading.

Also available: Student Book E (#0859)

and Book E Teacher Guide (#2490)

Recommended for 1st Grade.

In First Start Reading Book E, we complete the program by covering long vowel teams, soft c and g, and the three sounds of y.

Once the student has mastered the basic phonics in the FSR series, he is ready to continue his reading progress with real literature.

The First Start Reading Book E Teacher Guide provides valuable assistance as it leads you through the program and provides helpful assessments and teaching tips.
