Is there really a need for another phonics program? Well, we thought so! The first reading and printing lessons are critical, and although there are many adequate programs out there, we could not find one with the right combination we were looking for—a balanced, age-appropriate approach to phonics and reading, and a serious focus on correct pencil grip and letter formation. In addition, many phonics programs today use the ladder approach (consonant-vowel blending), which is fine, but we prefer the more traditional (vowel-consonant) approach combined with word families. And one more thing: mastery of the short vowels is the sine qua non of phonics programs, and few programs really give adequate practice in this very important skill. First Start Reading solved all of our little problems and made us happy. We hope you like it too.

  17. Greenleaf Famous Men of the Renaissance and Reformation Text

Greenleaf Famous Men of the Renaissance and Reformation Text

    SKU: 0303

    $16.95

The Renaissance and the Reformation are pivotal periods in both Church History, Western History, and World History. The Renaissance was the beginning of the modern world. Its leading thinkers were the first to recognize that there was now a huge gap between themselves and the ancient nations of Greece and Rome, and that civilization had been through a “dark age.” The Renaissance revered Greece and Rome and sought to recover the ancient languages, literature, art, and in some cases also their pagan religion. The biographies are written so that they can be profitably read by an upper elementary student as well as any high school student. 15 figures from the Renaissance and 15 from the Reformation whose lives illustrate the history of the times have been selected in this text.. From the Renaissance: Petrarch, Giotto, Brunelleschi, Donatello, Cosimo de’ Medici, Lorenzo de’ Medici, Savonarola, Botticeli, da Vinci, Michelangelo, Cesare Borgia, Machiavelli, Pope Leo X, and Erasmus. From the Reformation: Wyclif, Hus, Luther, Charles V, Durer, Zwingli, Muntzer, Grebel & Sattler, Menno Simons, Henry VIII, Thomas More, Tyndale, Cromwell & Cranmer, Calvin, and Knox.Reading through these biographies will give you a broad introduction to both the Renaissance and Reformation and help you to understand how the events of that time continue to shape our world today. 25. Heart & Mind

    Heart & Mind

    SKU: 0157

    $11.99

Ruth Beechick’s book Heart & Mind offers fresh insight on what the Bible says about learning. Teaching and learning are more effective when people are viewed with heart – with the image of God within them. All other learning theories view man as simply a body. The body learns by seeing, hearing, and sensing in other ways, but it is the heart that acts upon these stimuli. This book contains the most complete research available about heart in the Bible. The Bible says the heart knows, considers, speaks, remembers, deceives, meditates, and other functions that modernists like to attribute to the brain. This book also reports physiological research that shows the Bible was right all along in the way it spoke about heart. A chart in the appendix summarizes almost 1000 Bible references to heart by meaning. By restoring our understanding of the role of heart, Dr. Beechick is reminding educators and parents – and especially homeschoolers – that we are not only “educating,” but truly training up the child in the way that he or she should go – in the image of God. 183 pages, Paperback
