Syllabication Rules: The following are two reliable syllabication rules:
• When two or more consonants appear together in the middle of a word, divide the word between them (e.g., lit/tle). Then try the short vowel sound. Note that this does not work if the consonants form a digraph such as ch, tch, ck, ph, sh, or th.
• When only one consonant appears between two vowels, divide the word before the consonant (e.g., ho/tel). Then try the long vowel sound!
